Something to Think About

My favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien. His words, written more than three quarters of a century ago, still ring so true. He writes at a time when his generation has survived one world war and are facing another. They have learned to survive and even thrive with the threat of disaster hanging over their heads. The things they valued were faith, family and friendship. (I can't resist alliteration. It's my weakness.)

Some of Tolkien's themes include forgiveness, loyalty, brotherly love, compassion, courage and commitment. So here's my “OK Boomer” comment for the day; we have become so transfixed with money, celebrity, entertainment and social media that we have forgotten to appreciate the simple things...a really good cup of coffee, sunsets, laughter of children, birdsong and gentle conversation.

The 1st couple of days of “social-distancing”, I was a bit bored and cranky which is ridiculous because I am a very introverted enneagram 5 so being away from social situations should please me. But we are perverse creatures so being told I can't go to work or church or whatever makes me immediately feel that it's unfair.

I guess I really just want to encourage us to be ok with slowing down, reflecting, sitting in the sun, listening to great music. (Yours and mine may differ and that's alright) I am learning that I have to force myself into silence. My mind is never quiet. Even when I'm sincerely praying, it wanders onto a billion rabbit trails. I have to discipline myself to be still and listen to God. My hope is that I will take this time to allow God to make me into a better human.

This time in our lives is confusing, scary and frankly, inconvenient. But we are not at war, people aren't turning into zombies. We have food and water and electricity. I am thankful to have a home and family, gas in the jeep and space to breathe outside. Continue to look for places to serve, people to encourage and know that this will pass and perhaps we will be better for having lived through such a time. Hope and Peace.

The world is indeed full of peril and in it are many dark places.

But still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands, love is now mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps, the greater,

J.R.R. Tolkien
